titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of synthetic resins, and products containing the same |
abstract | 299,066. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Moss, W. H.). Oct. 21, 1927, [Convention date]. Phenol-ketone resins are produced by condensing a ketone with a pheno]-ketone such as diphenylol-propane which is made by condensing excess of a monohydric phenol with acetone in presence of a strong acid catalyst. The diphenyl propane may be condensed with acetone, or the resin may be formed direct by condensing phenol with an equimolecular proportion of acetone in presence of a strong acid. The resin is washed. and dried by distillation at ordinary or reduced pressure. Examples describe the production of the resin in each of the ways mentioned above, using hydrochloric acid as catalyst; the acetone may be replaced by other ketones such as methyl ethyl and diethyl ketones and the phenol by other monohydric phenols such as cresol. The resin is fusible and non-reactive and soluble in benzene. alcohol, and acetone and in the usual solvents for cellulose-ester lacquers. Lacquers may be made containing the synthetic resin and cellulose formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, and nitrate, and cellulose ethers such as methyl, ethyl, and benzyl cellulose. An example of a lacquer is cellulose acetate, synthetic resin, triacetin, acetone, benzene, alcohol, and ethyl lactate. The synthetic resin may also be used in making plastic compositions. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91. (3) (a) includes the use of other than monohydric phenols. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
