titleOfInvention Improved process for the manufacture of vat dyestuffs of the anthraquinone series
abstract 291,878. Carpmael, W., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 10, 1927. 1 : 1<1> - Dianthraquinonylamine-2-aldehydes; dianthraquinone-acridones.-1-Aminoanthraquinone- 2-aldehyde is condensed with a 1-halogenanthraquinone, or a derivative or substitution product thereof, in presence of an acid-binding agent and a catalyst of the kind facilitating the elimination of hydrogen halide such as a metal or metal salt particularly copper or a copper salt. The 1 : 1<1>- dianthraquinonylamine-2-aldehydes so obtained yield condensation products with aniline and are converted by treatment with acids or alkalies into dianthraquinoneacridones which dye cotton from the vat; the conversion can be effected even by vatting with alkali and hydrosulphite though it is preferred to purify the dianthraquinonylaminealdehyde by precipitation from sulphuric acid and then effect conversion into the acridone bv heating the acid paste either directly or with caustic soda solution. According to examples (1) 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde is condensed with 1-chloranthraquinone in presence of nitrobenzene, sodium acetate, and copper powder; the product yields with alkaline hydrosulphite a vat from which cotton is dyed in dull brown-yellow shades, but if the product is precipitated by water from a sulphuric acid solution and the paste boiled with or without caustic soda and then vatted, the vat dyes cotton clear brownyellow shades; (2) 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde is condensed similarly with 1-benzovlamino- 4- or 5-chloranthraquinone and the products precipitated from sulphuric acid solutions and the pastes boiled; they dye cotton from the vat in brown-orange and dark blue-violet shades respectively.
