titleOfInvention | An improved process for the production of benzanthrone derivatives |
abstract | 291,131. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 21, 1927. Benzanthrone derivatives. - Bz 1-methoxybenzanthrone and its derivatives are obtained by treating benzanthrone derivatives containing an interchangeable negative substituent in the Bz 1- position (e.g. a halogen atom or a nitro, sulphonic or sulphone group) with methyl alcohol in the presence of alkaline agents. The process is carried out by boiling under reflux or in an autoclave, caustic alkalis or alkaline carbonates being used as the alkaline agents, and in cases where nitrites are liable to be formed during the reaction, bodies adapted to destroy them, e.g. sodium sulphite or urea, may be added. The preparation of the following bodies is described in examples :-Bz 1-methoxybenzanthrone from Bz 1-nitro-, Bz 1-chlor-, and Bz 1-brom-benzanthrone from Bz-1-benzanthrone sulphonic acid and from Bz1: Bz1<1>-dibenzanthronyl sulphone (obtained by oxidizing Bz-1 : Bz-<1>-dibenzanthronyl sulphide with ammonium persulphate in sulphuric acid solution); Bz 1-methoxy-6-chlorbenzanthrone from Bz1-nitro-6-chlorbenzanthrone (obtained by nitrating 6-chlorbenzanthrone in nitrobenzene) and from Bz 1-brom-6-chlorbenzanthrone (obtained by brominating 6-chlorbenzanthrone in a solvent); Bz 1-methoxy-6-nitrobenzanthrone from Bz 1-dinitrobenzanthrone (example 5 of Specification 12518/06) and from Bz 1-chlor-6-nitrobenzanthrone : Bz 1-methoxy-6- methylbenzanthrone from Bz 1-nitro-6-methylbenzanthrone (example 8 of Specification 15979/11) and from Bz 1-chlor-6-methylbenzanthrone (obtained by chlorinating 6-methylbenzanthrone in a solvent); Bz 1-methoxy-8- chorbenzanthrone from Bz 1-nitro-8-chlorbenzanthrone (obtained by nitrating 8-chlorbenzanthrone in nitrobenzene) and from 8-Bz 1- dichlorbenzanthrane; and Bz 1-methoxy-6-brombenzanthrone from 6 : Bz 1-dibrombenzanthrone (example 3 of Specification 20837/06) and from Bz 1 - chlor-6-brombenzanthrone. Specification 257,618 also is referred to. |
