titleOfInvention Manufacture of mixed esters of cellulose
abstract 290,570. Kodak, Ltd., (Assignees of Clarke, H. T., and Malm, C. J.). May 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Cellulose nitrate-carboxylates, and processes for making films therefrom.-Cellulose esters containing both nitrate groups and halogen substituted acyl groups are prepared by treating nitrocellulose with an esterifying bath containing an agent capable of introducing into cellulose an acyl group having an ethylene linking, and subjecting the unsaturated nitro-ester so obtained to the action of an halogenating-agent. The nitrocellulose employed is preferably not fully nitrated, say of 11 per cent nitrogen content. It is preferred to use an esterifying-bath containing a powerful anhydride which does not itself esterify, in particular, monochloracetic anhydride, as described in Specification 313,408. Suitable esterifying- agents are crotonic acid, undecylenic acid and higher acids of the same series, and substituted acids such as cinnamic acid. The presence of a mild catalyst such as magnesium perchlorate is desirable. In an example, cellulose nitro-crotonate is first prepared; after separation and washing, this is dissolved in acetic acid and is then treated with bromine or chlorine, to give a product soluble in acetone, acetic acid or ether, and which from acetone solution produces transparent and flexible films.
