Catgut substitutes.-A substitute for catgut for use in tennis rackets &c. comprises silk strands deprived of sericin and impregnated with glue and a softening agent, a lubricant such as lard or castor oil being added to counteract any deleterious action of the softening agent. Before being impregnated the strands are twisted to form a cord-like product, and the impregnated cord may be waterproofed by exposure to the vapour of formaldehyde or by amy of the other usual tanning agents for leather, such as hexamethylene, tetramine, tannic acid, potassium dichromate and chromium and aluminium salts. Glycerine, glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, and the various polyglycerines may be used as softening agents. |
