titleOfInvention | Improvements in electric machines and apparatus |
abstract | 284,751. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Youngmark, F. A. Nov. 1, 1926. Coils and conductors; insulation. - The insulated high-tension windings of electrical machines and apparatus, such as the projecting coil-ends in a dynamo, are provided with a conducting or semi-conducting covering in intimate contact with and continuous over the surface of the insulation and connected to earth or other point of low potential in order to limit the potential difference which can exist between the surface and adjacent bodies. The air adjoining the windings is thereby kept practically free from electrical stress and brush discharges from the insulated surfaces of the windings are minimized. The covering may be applied to the surface of the insulating material before or after it is wrapped over the whole surface of the windings or locally, for instance where the two phases of an alternator winding cross each other or lie side by side. It may consist of a thin coating of carbon, such as floccular graphite in the form known under the registered Trade-mark " Aquadag " or powdered graphite mixed to a cream with benzine, painted on and polished with a brush before it completely dries. Or paper or tape soaked in a suspension of carbon in a liquid, such as Indian ink, may be employed. Alternatively, metal may be used in the form of foil on a graphite layer on the surface of the insulation or sprayed on to it by the Schoop process. In the case of slot-wound machines, form-wound coils may be coated during manufacture and inserted in slot liners which are similarly coated internally and externally so as to give an earth connection via the machine core. Leatheroid liners coated with " Aquadag " may be used for this purpose. The conducting surface may be covered with an additional coating, insulating or otherwise, for mechanical protection and the prevention of leakage across upstanding fibres or particles. Paint or varnish, with or without taping, may be used for this coating. |
