titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of alkyl ethers of protocatechuic aldehyde
abstract 284,199. Boedecker, F., (Assignee of Riedel Akt.-Ges., J. D.). Jan. 24, 1927, [Convention date]. Addition to 285,156. m- and p-Ethylprotocatechuic aldehydes are obtained by treating safrol or camphor oil with alcoholic alkalies as in the parent Specification, but ethylating the product instead of methylating it. Separation is effected as the propenyl pyrocatechin ether containing the alkyl radicle in the para position to the propenyl group is more difficultly soluble than the corresponding meta compounds, also the alkali salts and the acidyl compounds of the propenyl pyrocatechin ether ethylated in the meta position are more difficultly soluble than the para compounds and finally the m-ethylprotocatechuic aldehyde dissolves more easily in alkali carbonates than the para compounds. In examples (1) safrol is heated with methyl alcoholic potash is an autoclave, and on acidification of the aqueous alcoholic solution a mixture of m- and p-propenylpyrocatechinmonomethoxy ethers is obtained. This mixture is ethylated and saponified by dissolving in alcohol, acidifying and boiling, a product being obtained which smells like eugenol. The phenols thus obtained are dissolved in hexahydrotoluene and on cooling the p-ether crystallizes out, the acetate and benzoate being described. The m-ether is obtained bv crystallization of the sodium salt from a dilute caustic soda solution, the benzoate and acetate being described; (2) camphor oil is treated as before, a mixture of the methoxymethyl-ethylethers being obtained. This mixture is treated according to the process of the parent Specification or according to Specification 285.551, or finally according to the above described process.
