titleOfInvention | A method of manufacturing artificial threads, bands, films and the like, from solutions of cellulose esters and ethers |
abstract | 282,787. Ruth-Aldo Co., Inc., (Assignees of Barthelemy, H. L.). Dec. 28, 1926. [Convention date]. Grant of Patent opposed. Cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments and films from.-Artificial threads, films &c. formed from solutions in volatile solvents of cellulose esters or ethers are coagulated by means of propyl, butyl, or other higher aliphatic alcohol, or a poly alcohol such as glycol or glycerine, or an alcohol of the cyclic series such as cyclohexanol, methylcyclohexanol, cyclohexylcarbinol, or ac-tetrahydrobetenaphthol. A hydrocarbon such as xylene mav be added to the coagulation bath. In an example, a solution nf acetylcellulose in acetone is extruded into a mixture of cyclohexanol and xylene, the threads are collected in a centrifuge, and the cake is washed with benzene and dried. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the use of a coagulation bath the composition of which is selected in such a manner with respect to its rate of absorption of the solvent in the filaments as to impart the desired mechanical and physical qualities to the coagulated product. It refers to the use of the following coagulating liquids :-(1) Hydrocarbons boiling above 80 C., such as toluol, xylenes, dimethylnaphthalene, decane, tridecane, hexadecane, terpenes and polyterpenes; (2) cyclic hydrocarbons, such as cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, tetrahydronaphthalene, and decahydronaphthalene; (3) ethyl alcohol; (4) fatty acids of high molecular weight, such as oleic and ricinoleic acids; (5) the esters of the monohydric alcohols, such as oleates and palmitates, and the methyl, ethyl, butyl, propyl and amyl stearates; (6) halogenated compounds, such as di- and trichlorethylene, pentachlorethane, monochlorbenzene and toluene, alphabromnaphthalene, 1.2.3.trichlorbenzene, and benzyl chloride; (7) nitriles, such as benzonitrile, toluonitriles, and xylonitriles; (8) nitrated compounds, such as nitrobenzene and nitrotoluene; (9) mixtures of the above-mentioned substances. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
