Cellulose solutions, and processes for making filaments and films therefrom; cellulose esters and ethers.- Clear and transparent solutions are obtained by treating' cellulose such as cotton linters with phosphoric acid. preferably of 75-100 per cent strength, at a temperature from below freezing point up to 70‹ F., preferably between 30 and 50‹ F. To the phosphoric acid may be added, at the commencement or later, aliphatic acids or alcohols such as acetic, butyric or propionic acid, or ethyl alcohol. With acetic acid &c., especially if added in large quantity, cellulose esters are also formed while with the addition of alcohols, esterification may also take place. The solutions may be used for the manufacture of artificial silk, artificial horsehair, ribbons, &c., and also for impregnating and otherwise treating textile material, and for the preparation of cellulose esters, ethers, &c. |
