titleOfInvention | Physically Unclonable Function device |
abstract | The device comprises conductors arranged so that they interact electrically and/or magnetically with one another and surrounded by a media. Circuitry is configured to apply an electrical challenge signal to the conductors to generate an identifying PUF response unique to the device. Incorporated into the media surrounding the conductors are interactive regions having an electrical and/or magnetic response characteristic. The interactive regions may be permanently altered buy predetermined environmental events, thus subsequently the PUF’s identifying response is altered. For example, an adversary may expose the device to conditions outside its normal range of operation, which may indicate they are attempting to extract information other than by performing a call and response in order to build a model of the device. Therefore, it is difficult to model the device without access to the initial design and attempts to extract layout information from the device will render it inoperable. Further, tampering attempts may change the PUF output such that tampering is subsequently detected. The response characteristic may comprise conductivity, permittivity, permeability and magnetic moment of each of the interactive regions. The regions comprise neodymium and ferromagnetic particles distributed nonuniformly in the media. |
