abstract | An inkjet ink having a viscosity of 30-100 mPa s at 40°C comprises 40-90 wt.% multifunctional monomer and 10-30 wt.% polymeric photoinitiator. Typically, the multifunctional monomer is a multifunctional (meth)acrylate, such as ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (EOTMPTA), propoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (PoTMPTA), glycerolpropoxy triacrylate (GPTA), propoxylated pentaerythritol triacrylate, ethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (EOPETTA), di-trimethylolpropane tetraacrylate (DiTMPTA), or di-pentaerythritol hexaacrylate (DPHA). The polymeric photoinitiator may be a thioxanthone, benzophenone, phosphine oxide, or alpha-amino ketone. The ink may comprise two or more polymeric photoinitiators, <5 wt.% monofunctional monomer, and <5 wt.% water and volatile organic solvent combined. In a preferred embodiment, the ink further comprises 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol diacrylate (3MPDDA). A method of inkjet printing is also disclosed, the method comprising inkjet printing the ink onto a substrate and curing the ink through exposure to a curing source. The curing source may be a source of UV-LED radiation and the substrate may be food packaging. |
