abstract | A biocompatible material comprising a fibre, yarn or filament-based substrate having an open structure containing voids or interstitial regions; and a powdered iodine-complex releasably retained at the substrate and/or within the voids or interstitial regions. Preferably the substrate comprises a water-absorbing swelling polymer such as an alginate, and in some embodiments, it may further comprise a water-soluble control compound such as polyethylene glycol (PEG). The material may further comprise a membrane provided over at least one external surface of the substrate wherein the membrane may be a gauze or mesh. Also claimed is a method of forming the biocompatible material comprising contacting a powdered iodine-complex to a fibre, yarn, filament or multi-filament substrate thereby allowing the powdered iodine-complex to be releasable retained at the substrate and/or within the voids or interstitial regions. Preferably an aqueous-based liquid is applied to the substrate prior to or after the step of introducing the iodine-complex. The biocompatible material may be part of a material such as a wound dressing, nasal packing material or a dental packing material. |
