abstract Method of classifying materials by their spectral response to back-scattered gamma radiation includes sorting the spectral response into energy bands (a1-a5, figure 10) and selecting a combination of energy bands to define a relationship that best distinguishes e.g. explosives within electrical devices 1100 from those in glass containers 1105. The energy bands may overlap and are not necessarily of equal width. The gamma sources may include Ba-133 and Am-241, evenly distributed in a holder. A multidimensional plotter may be used to combine data relating to different energy bands, which may be selected at random, in any of a range of different ways, from which an optimizer component of the analyser can select a preferred relationship for distinguishing between at least two different materials or material types. The materials could be explosives, illegal drugs or contraband materials, concealed for example within portable electronic items.
