A protective packaging 22 for a tool 24, wherein the tool 24 includes a working portion W,26 and a tool centre point (TCP) associated with the working portion W,26. The protective packaging 22 comprising a casing 22 configured to receive the working portion W,26 and trackable features T provided on the casing 22 and wherein the trackable features T have a predetermined state defined relative to a state of the tool centre point TCP. The trackable features are configured to be detectable by a localizer 110 to locate the tool centre point TCP. The tool 24 is mounted to a surgical device 28. One or more controllers 104 are configured to store predetermined states of the trackable features T and to store an expected state of the tool centre point TCP based on an expected condition in which the tool is properly mounted to the surgical device 28,R. The localiser 110 detects actual states of the trackable features T in a coordinate system, and determines with the controllers 104 compares the actual state and expected state of the tool centre point TCP, and evaluates whether the tool 24 is properly mounted to the surgical device 28,R based on comparing the actual state and expected state of the tool centre point TCP. |
