titleOfInvention Method to measure the concentration of nitrogen dioxide with a fast time response and a high degree of sample pressure independence
abstract The invention relates to measuring NO2 concentration from a combustion engine by exciting the NO_2 using a laser, and then detecting the near-infrared light given off as it returns to its ground state; the near-infrared red light being produced proportional to the concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide. A sample probe 2 takes a sample from a source of emissions I such as an engine. The sample probe supplies sample gas to measurement chamber 8 via a thin capillary tube 7. Downstream of the entrance to capillary tube 7 is a chamber 5 held at constant pressure connected to a vacuum source 6, the aim being to keep the pressure at point 3 constant, and hence the flow into the capillary 7 constant. An ultraviolet or visible light source14 irradiates the gas sample in the measurement chamber 8 inducing fluorescence in nitrogen dioxide molecules present within the gas. This fluorescence is detected by a detector 10, producing a signal in proportion to the concentration of nitrogen dioxide at 1.
