abstract A formation model signal representing a formation model listing minerals present in the rock is generated or selected. The formation model signal is used to generate a formation mineral and fluid concentration data set signal. The first mineral and fluid concentration data set signal is used to calculate an elemental concentration signal representing a simulated log of elemental concentrations in the rock. A simulated energy spectrum signal and a simulated constraining log signal is forward modelled from the elemental concentration signal. A spectrum signal is obtained from gamma radiation detected when a neutron logging tool is operated in a borehole, and a constraining log signal representing one or more constraining log is also generated. The spectrum signal and the simulated energy spectrum signal are compared, as are the constraining log signal and the simulated constraining log signal, and error signals are determined. The formation mineral and fluid concentration data set signal is iteratively adjusted and the above steps repeated so as to select the formation mineral and fluid concentration data set which minimises the error signals.
