abstract |
A method of forming a tunnel includes drilling a first bore of at least 25m length (fig.1, 10), drilling a plurality of other bores (second bores) (fig. 1, 20) substantially parallel to the first bore to define a prism-shaped region, and excavating material from the prism-shaped region to form a tunnel. The excavation can be done using a tunnelling shield having probes 204 that extend into the already-drilled bores. The probes may have e.g. hydraulic splitters 216 or plough blades 214. Treatment such as hydraulic fracturing may be carried out to aid excavation as the shield advances. The bore drilling allows the surveying or assessment of geological conditions prior to full excavation of the tunnel. |
