abstract | A method of controlling an Adaptive Loop Filter (ALF) for one or more image portions of an image, the method comprising obtaining first information, such as one or more filter identifiers or information indicating a class or group to which the image portion belongs (each class or group being associated with a filter identifier) for identifying a first adaptive loop filter useable on a block of the first image portion. Next, second information for indicating a count of filter sets is obtained, each filter set comprising one or more filters. Then, for the first image portion, third information such as an alternative filter index is obtained for identifying a second adaptive loop filter from one of the filter sets. The method then involves controlling to use the second filter on the block based on the second information and the third information. Preferably one filter is a linear adaptive loop filter and the other is a nonlinear ALF. Claims to apparatus and methods for decoding and encoding using the method above are also disclosed. The method may be used to improve coding efficiency in the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. |
