abstract |
A fibre comprising a self supporting hollow polymeric sheath 5 and a colour component 4 comprising a liquid crystal. The liquid crystal preferably being unencapsulated, the fibre being preferably transparent or translucent. The sheath may comprise a thermoplastic polymer and may also comprise a colour component which may be an encapsulated liquid crystal, a dye and/or pigment as a dispersed phase. The inner colour component may also comprise a dye or pigment and may comprise a dark colour component such as carbon black or carbon nano-tubes. The colour component may also comprise silica, mica, or precious materials or minerals and may further contain a component which undergoes at solid/liquid phase change or softening at a temperature below 50 C such as gallium or wax. Also included are claims to artificial hair and fabrics made of the fibre materials and a garment or fabric product made using said fabric. Lastly is included a method claims comprising using a polymer melt which is extruded to produce a hollow tube which is filled with a flowable colour component comprising liquid crystal. |
