titleOfInvention | Fibre |
abstract | A fibre comprising a core 4 which is electrically conductive or undergoes a structural change in response to external stimulus which may be applied selectively, sheathed in an outer polymeric layer 5, the fibre comprising a further component susceptible to a change in properties or structure in response to external stimulus 6 disposed between the core and the sheath. Preferably the core is electrically conductive and adapted to received current to provide a thermochromic response in the further component 6 due to the heating effect. The component may be a liquid crystal which may be unencapsulated liquid disposed between the core and sheath or encapsulated crystal polymer. The conductive core may be metal, preferably steel, aluminium or copper. The outer layer is preferable transparent or translucent and may be thermoplastic. The sheath may comprise a colourant and may be substantially free of components which impair the visual effect of the liquid crystal. Also included are claims to a fabric made from the fibres, a garment or fabric product made from said fabric, use of a liquid crystal in a fibre to provide a colour change, a process for production of such a fibre and a method for providing a change in colour within such a fibre. |
