A medical device including a structure for implantation or disposition inside a patient, the structure including at least one surface at least partially covered by a layer of a carboxylic acid or a derivative of carboxylic acid 52, 52’; said layer being an outermost layer of the structure. The medical device is preferably a stent (10, fig. 1) or medical balloon (40, fig. 3) and the carboxylic acid coating is preferably citric acid, in some embodiments citric acid mixed with citrate. The coating may be in non-crosslinked and non-porous form. In some embodiments, the medical device includes an abluminal 52 and a luminal surface 52’, both having the carboxylic acid, but wherein one of the surfaces further has a layer of bioactive material 60, such as paclitaxel. Also claimed is the use of the medical device in the reduction or prevention of thrombogenesis and in the enhancement of endothelialisation. |
