abstract Protective medium 12, of an electronic component protection device, is associated with magnetic element 14 and Hall sensor 16 (or optionally a plurality thereof), the Hall sensor being located to sense a magnetic field of the magnetic element. The magnetic element and/or the Hall sensor is embedded in the protective medium. An integrity monitor receives an output of the Hall sensor, and identifies from any change to the magnetic field the integrity of the component protection device, in an aspect by comparing the output with data stored at a configuration stage. The integrity monitor may monitor thermal conductivity of the protective medium, or its susceptibility to environmental conditions such as water, sand or temperature. The integrity monitor may supply an electric current to the Hall sensor(s). Detection of a change in integrity may trigger a predetermined action, such as setting non-volatile memory associated with the electronic component to a write-protect state.
