titleOfInvention Electrical discharge method and apparatus
abstract A method of imparting a hardened finish to the surface of an electrically conductive workpiece 3 by an electrical discharge technique is disclosed. The method comprises effecting relative movement between an electrode carrier 10comprising one or more electrodes and the workpiece surface 3, applying across the gap defined between the electrodes and the adjacent workpiece surface 3 a series of discrete electrical discharges, and supplying to the gap present between the electrode(s) and the workpiece surface 3 a dielectric fluid 9 within which is dispersed a quantity of particles of a material of different electrical conductivity and/or permittivity to that or those of the dielectric fluid 9. At least two particles are present with percentage concentration ranges of 0.10-10 and 0.05-7µm. The particles may be sized between 0.20-15µm and comprise graphite and carbide. The workpiece can be a work roll 3. The method may also be used to provide texturing on a workpiece surface 3.
