titleOfInvention Kit and method
abstract A method for determining the presence of an acidic sulphide species in a liquid sample of an industrial or environmental material, comprises the steps of: (a) contacting the sample or an extract thereof with a composition comprising a metal complex dye compound; where the electromagnetic absorption spectrum of the metal complex dye compound changes upon reaction with an acidic sulphide species. Preferably, the sample is selected from fluids in or extracted from an oil well, petroleum refinery, water, sewage, and geothermal flows. Preferably the dye is the copper (II) 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol. Step (a) may involve the steps of (a1) contacting the liquid sample with an extraction composition to provide an aqueous extract, and (a2) contacting the aqueous extract with a composition comprising a metal complex dye compound. The method may also include a step (b) of examining the electromagnetic spectrum of the composition obtained in step (a) by observing the colour of the resultant composition, e.g. using a spectrometer.
