abstract A cooking device 1 for frying food in a microwave oven comprises a low pressure gas chamber 2; a plasma igniting means configured to ignite plasma within the low pressure gas chamber when supplied with microwave radiation; and a cooking enclosure 3 formed of metal, the cooking enclosure defining a food-receiving region and being thermally coupled to the low pressure gas chamber. In use, a food item to be cooked is placed on to metal frying plate 4, the cooking enclosure is closed by placing metal cover 6 over the frying plate to shield the food item from microwave radiation and the entire device is loaded into a standard microwave oven. Once the microwave oven is turned on, microwave radiation causes plasma to be ignited in the low pressure gas chamber, producing heat that is transferred by conduction from the walls of the chamber to the frying plate.
