titleOfInvention Tomography by dissolution analysis
abstract A new approach to achieving chemical mapping on a nanoscale is claimed that can provide 2D and tomographic images of surface and near-surface structure. A grid/scale or graduation is mapped to the surface of the sample and the surface within the grid imaged to generate a first image. Material is then dissolved from the surface of the sample by applying a series of aliquots of solvent then analyzing their contents after removing them while in between exposures to the solvent, the surface is imaged with a form of microscopy to provide at least a second image which is compared to the first. These images can provide a map of the topography of the surface of a sample and by combining the analysis of the remove surface with the imaging data a 2D map of surface composition can be obtained. Furthermore composition as a function of depth may be determined thus enabling tomography.
