abstract | A method of mass or ion mobility spectrometry comprises ionising analyte from a sample to generate a plurality of ions. Precursor ions are separated from first fragment and/or other ions of the plurality of ions, for example by separating ions according to their ion mobility or by filtering ions according to their mass to charge ratio. At least some of the precursor ions are fragmented or reacted to generate second fragment ions, and the sample is classified or identified based on the analysis of the second fragment ions. The first fragment or other ions may be prevented from being analysed by filtering. Alternatively, the ion peaks corresponding to the first fragment or other ions may be removed or attenuated from the data set. The ion source may be an ambient ionisation or direct analysis ion source capable of generating gas-phase ions directly from native (i.e. untreated or unmodified) samples without prior sample preparation. |
