abstract | A fertilizer composition comprising a basic component and a particulate acidic fertilizer having a surface, wherein the surface of the particulate acidic fertilizer is treated with the basic component. Also disclosed is a fertilizer composition comprising a basic component and a particulate urease inhibitor containing urea source having a surface, wherein the surface of the particulate urease inhibitor containing urea source is treated with the basic component. Further disclosed is a fertilizer composition comprising a particulate urease inhibitor containing urea source, a particulate acidic fertilizer and a basic component; the basic component is used to treat the surface of the particulate urease inhibitor containing urea source and/or the particulate acidic fertilizer. Preferably, the particulate acidic fertilizer is selected from phosphates or sulfates. The basic component may comprise organic carboxylic or sulfonic acid salts, metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal alkoxides, metal carbonates, metal bicarbonates or amines. Preferably, the urease inhibitor is N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT). Methods of making the compositions are also provided. The fertilizer composition of the invention provides an improved urease inhibitor storage time by reducing the impact of acidic conditions, particularly acidic characteristics arising from the combination of a urease inhibitor with an acidic fertilizer. |
