titleOfInvention Structural elucidation of intact heavy molecules and molecular complexes in mass spectrometers
abstract A method of mass spectrometric analyses for heavy molecular ions and molecular complex ions having m/z above 2000 daltons, comprising collision in a linear RF multipole collision cell 7 containing a mixture of a light collision gas (<40 daltons) and a heavy collision gas (>80 daltons). The ions are axially injected into the collision cell and may have an acceleration voltage of 100 to 300 volts. Due to the collisions with the heavy gas molecules, such as Xe, Kr, SF6, UF6 or C4F10, ions may be fragmented and deflected from the injection axis, causing strong oscillations in the radial direction of the focusing RF field. The light collision gas, such as N2, He, Ne or Ar, may dampen these oscillations. Electrospray ion sources 1, 2 may be used with a pH neutral aqueous solution, where the ions used may be formed from proteins. Mass analysis may be performed using Kingdon traps.
