abstract An image processing method comprises: obtaining image data defining a microscope slide image (haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue sample); obtaining descriptor data indicating tissue type from which the sample originates; selecting, based on descriptor data, an image operation to transform the image data; applying the selected image operation to the image data, identifying a number of discrete spatial image regions; selecting, based on descriptor data, a set of quantitative image metrics; determining, for each discrete spatial region, a sample region data value for each of the set of quantitative image metrics based on the subset of image data associated with the discrete spatial region(s); using the descriptor data to select at least one comparator set of tissue model data values, each associated with a different corresponding comparator tissue structure and comprising data values of the set of quantitative image metrics for the corresponding comparator tissue structure; comparing the sample region data value for each discrete region with the comparator set(s); and, if the sample region data value matches the comparator set, providing a match-indicating map. Also claimed are methods using spatial (length scale) filtering or modifying an image transformation when an unclassified structure is identified.
