abstract |
An interference system 200, e.g. for use in quantum communication systems, comprises a master light source 204 and a slave light source 201 integrated on a semiconductor substrate, an interference apparatus configured such that input light pulses interfere at an interference component, e.g. beam splitter 206, and a controller. The input of the interference apparatus is provided by a phase-randomised light source comprising the master light source 204 intermittently generating master light pulses such that the phase of each master light pulse has a random relationship to the phase of each subsequently generated master light pulse and supplying the master light pulses to the slave light source 201. The controller applies a first time varying drive signal to the slave light source 201 such that just one slave light pulse is generated during each period of time for which a master light pulse is received such that the phase of each slave light pulse has a random relationship to the phase of each subsequently generated slave light pulse. This stimulated emission of light pulses results in reduced time jitter of the light pulses and good interference visibility. |
