titleOfInvention | Auxiliary gas inlet |
abstract | A method of introducing ions into a mass spectrometer comprises ionising a sample using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation (MALDI), transporting the ions in a first gas 20 through a passageway 30 into an inlet 50 of a mass spectrometer, introducing a second auxiliary gas 70 into the inlet, and controlling the flow rate of the second gas so as to control the flow rate of the first gas through the passageway. A heated zone 40 for desolvating ions and generating multiply charged ions may be provided, and the flow rate of the second gas may be optimised for the generation of multiply charged ions in the first gas, e.g. by changing the residence time of the ions in the passageway. The second gas may cause the flow of the first gas to be laminar or turbulent. The inlet may be sealed such that the only the first and second gases flow into the inlet. |
