titleOfInvention Impactor spray ion source
abstract An ion source comprises a nebuliser 1 that provides a stream of droplets which are caused to impact upon a planar or rod shaped target 50 to ionise the droplets. The target 50 further comprises protuberances such as fin or strake structures 14 or cavities configured to disturb gas flowing along a surface of the target. The gas disturbance gives rise to vortices that increase the contact with the target surface and increases ionisation efficiency. High Reynolds number (i.e. high density, low viscosity) nebulising gasses provide the greatest concentration of vortices at the target surface. A method of selecting a nebulising gas on the basis of the density and viscosity of the nebulising gas compared with the density and viscosity of nitrogen gas is also disclosed.
