abstract A logging tool 12 which is disposed in a borehole in a formation comprises a pulsed neutron source 18 and a gamma-ray detector 26. The neutron source emits a burst of neutrons to the formations surrounding the downhole, and the gamma-ray detector detects inelastic, epithermal capture and thermal capture gamma-rays during the burst and within the burst-off thermal capture interval, to determine the counts of inelastic, epithermal and thermal gamma-rays. A relationship between the epithermal capture gamma-rays count rate during the burst and the thermal capture gamma-rays count rate during the thermal burst-off decay window can be used therefor, which may include subtracting the epithermal and thermal burst-on counts to derive the inelastic counts.
