abstract |
A method of mass spectrometry or ion mobility spectrometry comprises separating analytes in an electrophoresis or liquid chromatography separator 1. The separated analytes are ionised (e.g. by ion source 2) as they elute from the separator 1. The analyte ions are transmitted to at least one device that manipulates the ions, wherein the operation of the device is varied based on the elution time of the analyte ions. The device 3 may be a mass filter such that only ions of a selected charge state are transmitted. The device 4 may be a fragmentation device that varies the collision energy or fragmentation technique as a function of the elution time. The device 5 may be a time-of-flight mass analyser wherein an extraction delay period or ion release frequency are varied as a function of the elution time. The device may also be a gas phase ion mobility separator or a mass selective ion trap. |
