titleOfInvention Method of isolating ions
abstract Ions derived from chemical compounds in the same class are isolated using a linked scanning system comprising a mobility separator 4 and a mass-charge ratio filter 6. The temporal separation of the ions is removed after mass filtering, such as with an ion trap or a collision cell 8. This may reduce the required data storage and spectrometer resolution. Ions of the same functional group or with shared moieties, for example, may be isolated in this way. Ions may further be distinguished by switching from a fragmentation (daughter analysing) mode to a non-fragmentation (pre-cursor or parent analysing) mode and applying an analysis technique, such as MSE.
