titleOfInvention Acoustic apparatus and operation
abstract A portable acoustic warning device uses psycho-acoustic principles to create a highly directional acoustic waveform towards a target, creating a narrow beam of sound that is perceived by the target to be louder than it actually is. The beam minimises exposure to users and bystanders. The device comprises a cone-shaped horn 2302 connected to a sound pressure generating source. A phase plug 2306, which may be bi-conical in shape and have an acoustically absorbent ring 2304 mounted on it, is located within the horn. A second acoustically absorbent ring 2306 is preferably provided at the wide end of the horn. A signal generating system 2301 produces a first waveform which modulates around the first resonant frequency of the human ear canal, preferably between 3.5kHz and 4.0kHz at a rate of 0.15 to 0.25 seconds. The device may be used by Police in conflict management situations. A laser range finder may limit the sound level at the target to a pre determined level. An integrated camera may be used to aid aiming. Video footage may be recorded with use; along with the sound level at the target, exposure duration, time, date and GPS coordinates.
