titleOfInvention | A wound care device comprising an acid, and a method of treating said device with ethylene oxide |
abstract | The wound care device is disclosed, which is obtainable by bringing together a first material and an acidic substance to form an intermediate device. The first material does not substantially gel when exposed to a non-acidic fluid but does gel when brought together with an acidic substance and exposed to a fluid. The device is then exposed to ethylene oxide. Preferably, the first material and the acid do not react with each other in the intermediate device. The first material is preferably chitosan or a chitosan derivative and it may be used in the form of fibres. The acid is preferably lactic, acetic and/or succinic acid. The acid may be absorbed in a second material selected from cellulose, cellulose derivatives, cotton, alginate, viscose, PP, PE or combinations thereof. The treatment with ethylene oxide (EO or oxirane) may comprise a sterilization phase, which may be conducted in a sealed chamber under reduced pressure at 45 to 55 ºC for 0.5 to 5 h. The device may be used in wound care to absorb a discharge of bodily fluid from a physiological target. |
