titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to processes of making moulded articles
abstract 250,942. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Peterson, C. F.). April 14, 1925, [Convention date]. Moulding resins.-Relates to the moulding of articles with a binder of the glyptal class and consists in heating materials to which the binder has been applied to a temperature sufficiently high to cause partial curing of the binder under conditions permitting escape of volatile by-products and then continuing the polymerization under pressure. For example, mica cones for commutators are formed by pasting together sheets of mica covered with a solution of glyptal in acetone having a specific gravity of 0.86. The mass is then heated in an oven at 110‹ C. for 30 minutes to two hours to drive off acetone and cause partial polymerization, after which the plates are then subjected to pressure in a press as described in Specification 23671/10, [Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.], under a pressure of 500-1000 lbs. per sq. inch and at a temperature of 160-170‹ C. The hydraulic pressure is released several times during the first five or ten minutes for the escape of volatile constituents after which full pressure of 1000 1bs. is applied for 45 minutes. The finished sheets are milled and cut to the desired forms which are subjected to pressure in moulds for ten minutes at 250‹C. Specifications 3271/13 and 8417/13, [both in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], also are referred to.
