abstract | A processor analyses a tomographic X-ray image to identify repeating structures with a length and width consistent with cigarettes, rectangular volumes of predefined aspect ratio matching that of predefined brands of cigarette packaging having a density that is consistent with predefined brands of cigarettes. These parameters are used for identifying cigarettes by mapping against a database. The tomographic X-ray image may be obtained using a non-rotating X-ray scanner. Also disclosed are methods of detecting knives, firearms, narcotics, nuclear materials, currency and liquids, systems for sorting scanned items into categories (e.g. threat, or clear). |
