titleOfInvention Differential amplifier with digital gain control
abstract Disclosed is an amplifier for amplifying a differential audio signal such as a signal from a microphone. The amplifier provides common-mode rejection and digital gain control. Current sources 509 and 512 supply constant current to a first current path 503 and a second current path 504. Current paths 503 and 504 pass via current mirrors 505 and 506 to an input stage comprising transistors 511 and 514. The input stage modulates the currents in the current paths in response to a differential input signal, and an output stage 518 produces an output signal by amplifying the difference in current between the current paths. A degree of feedback is provided to the input stage by a feedback stage comprising transistors 510 and 513. The feedback stage modulates the current in the current paths in response to the output signal. The degree of modulation by the feedback stage is determined by the attenuation provided by digital-to-analog converters 522 and 523 located therein. Use of a single converter is also disclosed (fig.6). The gain of the amplifier is set by the ratio of two resistances R2 and R1 and controlled by the DACs.
