titleOfInvention Managing Tracking Loops for Enhanced Sensitivity Tracking of GNSS Signals
abstract The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for making accuracy improvements to a GPS receiver's navigation calculations especially when satellite signals are weak. According to a first aspect, the invention includes extreme sensitivity GNSS tracking loops such as first order code tracking loop 202 and a second order carrier AFC tracking loop 204. In embodiments, the tracking loops are self-bandwidth normalizing and the loop bandwidths automatically narrow with reduced signal strength eg. CNO. A claimed embodiment comprises a magnitude estimator that determines an estimate of GNSS signal strength, formed in block 206 from the on-frequency I and Q correlators. A tracking loop discriminator 208,212 receives the estimate and automatically sets a bandwidth of the tracking loop discriminator based on the estimate. A loop filter 210, 214 that receives an output from a tracking loop discriminator provides a value that is used to control an oscillator in a tracking loop.
