abstract | A data encoding method for encoding successive input data bits comprises the steps of: selecting one of two complementary sub-ranges of a set of code values according to whether a current input data bit is a one or a zero (see figure 19A), the proportions of the two sub-ranges relative to the set of code values being defined by a context variable (CV 40 1120) associated with that input data bitThe current input data bit is assigned 1130 to a code value within the selected sub-range. The set of code values is modified in dependence upon the assigned code value and the size of the selected sub-range. It is then decided whether the set of code values is less than a predetermined minimum size. If the set of code values is less than the predetermined minimum size the size of the set (i.e. the range) is successively increased 1140 until it has at least the predetermined minimum size; and an encoded data bit is output in response to each such size-increasing operation. The context variable is modified for use in encoding a subsequent input data bit, so as to increase the proportion of the set of code values in the sub-range which was selected for the current data bit by the greater of either (1) a predetermined minimum increment, or (2) an increment derived in dependence upon a predetermined fractional amount of the current proportion. The modification of the context variable increases the probability that a subsequently encoded input data bit will be assigned to a code value from the currently selected sub-range. A data encoding apparatus for performing the encoding method is also described, together with a corresponding method and apparatus for decoding data which has been encoded using the encoding method apparatus. The method and apparatuses described have particular application in the encoding/decoding of video data. |
