A method for preparing an anion exchange membrane suitable for use in an alkaline fuel cell and particularly in a direct borohydride fuel cell, involves radiation grafting a hydrocarbon polymer film with a monomer of vinyl pyridine (VPy) in the presence of a diluent comprising an alcohol and a hydrocarbon solvent, and adding a quaternising agent selected from hydrochloric acid (HCl), 2-chloroacetamide (2-CA), or dimethylformamide (DMF). The degree of grafting is improved by mixing the monomer with a diluent comprising alcohol and a hydrocarbon solvent. |
