abstract At an OFDM receiver 300 of subcarriers assigned to transmitting antennas 201-n (see fig. 2), antenna-to-subcarrier assignment (ASTA) information (I1, I2, ..., In) is fed into a channel estimator 306 which constructs a frequency correlation matrix according to equation 2. This approximates resultant channelRf as zero for uncorrelated channels from different antennas (ie. for a#b) and asRa,f = Ef(ffH) for channels from the same antenna (ie. a= b), where E is the expectation value, H is the Hermitean transpose andfis a channel fading coefficient vector based on the Channel Impulse Responsehand the partial Fourier matrixΘ. These fading coefficients may be estimated according to a minimum mean squared error (MMSE) method as in equation 4. The ASTA information may be transmitted via a separate control channel or via a differentially encoded preamble.
