abstract | Prepregs for manufacturing composite materials comprise of fibrous material contacting polymerisable resin, wherein at least 50 wt% of the resin comprises at least one polymerisable monomer having at least two carbon-carbon unsaturated functional groups. A preferred example of the polymerisable monomer is a polyvinylester, the vinyl group comprising a (meth)acrylate group and the polyester including an epoxy resin residue. The monomer is polymerisable by reaction of the unsaturated functional groups to form a cured resin preferably wherein the heat of polymerisation is less than 230 KJ/kg to provide maximum increase in temperature of the prepreg of 60°C during polymerisation under adiabatic conditions. Also disclosed is a method of producing the prepreg. Further disclosed is a prepreg comprising a fibrous material impregnated with a radical curable, polymerisable polyfunctional unsaturated resin, the resin comprising at least one polymerisable monomer, at least 50 wt% of the monomer having a general formula An-B, wherein A is an unsaturated functional group derived from a hydroxyalkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid with a dicarboxyl acid or acid anhydride and B is a functional group derived from a multifunctional epoxide having n epoxide groups where n is at least 2. Further disclosed is a prepreg comprising fibrous material impregnated with a radical curable, polymerisable polyfunctional unsaturated resin, the resin comprising at least one polymerisable monomer, at least 50 wt% of the monomer having a general formula Cm-D, wherein C is an unsaturated functional group derived from a glycidyl (meth)acrylate and D is a multifunctional compound with m reactive sites, each site capable of reacting with an epoxide group and is derived from a carboxylic acid, a phenol or at least one of a primary alpine or a disecondary amine, m is at least 2. Also disclosed is a method producing a moulded fibre-reinforced composite material comprising polymerising the monomer in the prepregs to form a cured resin matrix containing the fibrous material. |
