abstract A system for interrogating a package, container, vehicle, or similar article to determine the presence of nuclear material containing uranium or plutonium. The system includes a source of photo-fission energy, such as gamma radiation, configured to irradiate the examination article and trigger fission of a fissile or fissionable material present in the article. This generates of fission products, including gamma rays and neutrons. A neutron to gamma ray converter material captures fission neutrons and emits internal gamma radiation. A gamma radiation detector is configured to detect gamma radiation from this process, in addition to gamma rays emitted by the material or from neutron interactions. The gamma detector can be BGO and the converter material may be boron or gadolinium isotopes in polyethylene.
