titleOfInvention A plasma system that produces hydroxyl radicals for sterilisation
abstract This invention relates to a system and method for producing concentrations of OH radicals to decontaminate sections of hospital wards, hospital bed-spaces or operating theatres. The system uses a plasma source, generated using controllable microwave or RF energy and a suitable gas (or mixture of gases) to create the necessary ionisation discharges, which are combined with a controlled mist (or fog) to create a supply of OH radicals. The OH radicals are pumped into a flexible and portable enclosure that is set up to encapsulate (or isolate) the region to be decontaminated and enable a high enough concentration of OH radicals to be developed to allow effective decontamination to be performed. The design for a new applicator and a self contained waveguide cavity based system that takes in microwave energy, a gas (or a mixture of gases) and a supply of pressurised water and gives out controllable plasma and high concentrations of OH radicals are also disclosed. The system comprises: a microwave or RF power generator, a mist or fog or moisture generator (505), a gas or mixture of gases (401), a means of controlling the gas or mixture of gases (402), a device that combines the microwave/RF power, the gas or mixture of gases and the mist to produce the OH radicals (No), a means of delivering the OH radicals into the region to be decontaminated (301), a portable enclosure (600) to isolate the region being decontaminated, items requiring decontamination (610, 620, 630), a gas extraction and recycling system (800, 840, 860, 865), a microprocessor to control the operation of the system (140), and a user interface unit to display information relating to the operation of the system and to allow the user to input data (150).
