abstract |
A method of determining the particulate solid contamination of liquid hydrocarbons, such as fuels or oils, that may also be contaminated with water. The method comprises admixing one or more microemulsion-forming surfactants with the liquid hydrocarbon prior to analysis with an automatic particle counter. The surfactant acts to distribute or solubilise the water present in the liquid hydrocarbon so as to prevent erroneous particle counting data that may arise from its presence. A variety of microemulsion forming surfactants may be used, but are preferably benzalkonium chloride, C6— C15alcohol ethoxylates, C6— C24alkyl amine oxides or mixtures thereof. |
