titleOfInvention Analyzing a downhole fluid by decreasing the density of a fluid sample
abstract Methods and apparatus for downhole fluid analysis by decreasing the density of a downhole fluid sample are described. The apparatus 400 comprises a valve 308 which controls the fluid flow between a flowline 302 and a chamber 402. A predetermined amount of fluid enters the chamber 402 and the pressure and density of the fluid decrease. Once a sample is captured within the chamber 402, a sensor 310 measures the pressure of the sample. If there is an unacceptable difference between the measured pressure and a predetermined pressure, the motor 412 may extend or retract the piston 406 within bore 404 to change the pressure within the chamber 402 toward the predetermined pressure. Then, tunable light source 322 transmits light through the gaseous portion of the sample and the fluid measurement unit 316 performs an optical measurement to measure characteristics or parameters of the sample. The fluid measurement unit 310 may alternatively comprise a spectrometer, metal corrosion or optical reflection measurement unit. Decreasing the density of the sample may increase the number of absorption peaks associated with the sample.
